My Hopes, Dreams, and Regards for Destiny 2: Forsaken

With just only 7 more days until Forsaken, I just wanted to express what the article title expresses, my hopes, wishes, and regards for this upcoming dlc. My “hopes” are more broader points than my “wishes” , which are more specific and in depth, and my “regards” are the comments I have going into Forsaken.  Please do bear in mind that the story parts of this article are mostly speculation, and if you had been residing in a loot cave and do not want potenial spoilers, turn away now Guardians.

With that out of the way, let’s get down to business, shall we?

Here are 3 lists in total with one for each category (Hopes, Wishes, and Regards):

Hopes:

• I hope that the story side of things is much better than before, especially since it is more gritty than the other campaigns.
•I genuinely hope that the game is actually fun to play again, and that it gives you genuinely good reasons to come back for more. In other words, Forsaken truly needs to bring back the D1 magic that D2 severely lacked.
• I truly, sincerely hope that Eververse is better handled come Season 4 (aka Forsaken)

Wishes:

• After watching the new “Last Stand of the Gunslinger” cinematic (which was released last week) for the bazillionth time, I can safely say that this is one of, if not the best cinematic that us Guardians have had the pleasure to see. Not only was the action spot on, but for once in the franchise’s 4 year life, we actually get a hint of a certain emotion that was missing during pretty much every release in the series (I’m looking at you “Curse of Osiris”!). That emotion in question, is pure, unfliltered, bittersweetness. It only took 4 words to convey this emotion: “I’m coming home, Ace”. If you have read Cayde’s journal entries in Destiny 2, you likely know who “Ace” is. For those that don’t understand this part of the lore, I would recommend watching some videos about Cayde’s tragic past life. For those that do, I wish that after we see Cayde die, there would be a flashback sequence (a la Lost) that showed Cayde as a human, with his family, before he got converted to an exo. This flashback could show Cayde and Ace’s relationship, and before Cayde leaves to Clovis Bray to become an exo, he could say something like “Don’t worry Ace, I’ll come home” , to calm his panicking son down. This would serve as a parallel to the final moment in the “Last Stand” trailer I mentioned earlier, and it would help make the campaign in Forsaken much more compelling than it would be otherwise. The trailer already alluded to us that Cayde wants to be with his son, but if we got a flashback cutscene similar to what I just mentioned, it would make the story much more satisfying.

• I am extremely confident that I speak for most, if not all of us Guardians when I wish that we can get our voices back. It should be non-negotiable at this point, especially seeing that Forsaken boasts a more personal story this time around, that our guardians must speak at least a few lines. For example, when we get to see how the Last City and the Vanguard react to Cayde’s death, we should be able to talk to Zavala, Shaxx, and Ikora about it, and not just stand there like a dimwit. Another example would be when we finally face Uldren in a final standoff. During that pivotal moment in the overarching story of Forsaken, we should be able to exchange a few words with him as we clash. An excellent moment (which would reference Destiny’s reveal way back in E3 2013) would be when you beat Uldren and he says something like “Wait! We can talk about this!” , and our guardians would say: “Out here in the wild, this is how we talk”, and then proceed to pull the trigger on Uldren. The point I’m trying to get at here, is that this revenge story would be nowhere as compelling without our Guardians’ voices.

Update: Well, I’ll be darned, it looks like we already got one of our wishes, oh readers mine! If you haven’t seen the Forsaken launch trailer which was just released as I was writing this article, you most certainly should!

• My “Last Wish” (which “totally” isn’t a play on words for the new raid) is that we get an Ahamkara as either the final raid boss or at least a pivotal part of the raid’s story. Other than the name of the raid, there have been a couple of clues that allude to this being the case. For example, IGN referenced the Dreaming City as a cursed city with a dragon guarding it. In the Dreaming City trailer, Petra Venj says that there is a immense creature at the heart of the city. There is even an area in the Dreaming City called the “Keep of Voices” , which obviously sounds like a dragon’s keep! The list of hints goes way beyond what I’ve just mentioned, and my point is honestly self-explantory: Give us a chance to see and encounter a majestic, wish-giving dragon, Oh Bungie mine!

Regards:

• When it comes down to it, Forsaken’s story campaign seems to have a lot of potential to possibly be the best campaign the Destiny franchise has ever seen, but do notice how I say “seems”.  In order for that to be the case, Bungie had better made sure that it isn’t rushed. We should be able to experience a sad, but satisfying revenge tale, and not just some one-and-done kind of campaign. Even if parts of the story aren’t present in the campaign, they would hopefully be told through either the new in-game lore, side quests, or in the raid itself.
•After also watching the newly released launch trailer for the trillionth time, things look extremely promising for the story side of things! The trailer shows us a heck of a lot more of the villain side of the story. And if you pay enough attention, one particular shot of the trailer appears to show a hallucination of Uldren’s sister, Mara Sov.  But in spite of all the great news regarding the storytelling front, I am still cautiously optimistic about it. But seriously though, just by watching this new trailer, you know that something’s about to go down, you just know!

• From what Bungie told us about the PvP changes, they too seem really promising. From 3-tap hand cannon kills, to 1-hit shoulder charge, it appears that the Crucible will soon become a symbol for the return of Destiny’s glory days.

• I also want to compliment Bungie for allowing us to get a sneak peek of Gambit via the 24-hour free trial on September 1st. It’s pretty cool that we get a little appetizer before the main course comes to “forsake” our soon-to-be-upset stomachs.

•Judging by all of the news that we’ve gathered from the past few months, it definitely goes without saying that there will not be an issue when it comes to the amount of content in this expansion! From “Outlaw Lost Sectors” to “The Blind Well”,  there will be plenty of things to do in Forsaken, and that’s not even mentioning the return of trandom rolls!

Conclusion:

All and all, things are definitely looking up for Forsaken. As Bungie’s final effort to bring us Guardians back to the light, it definitely looks like they’ve gone all out for this upcoming release. However, it will take me a while to review it, considering that the amount of content in Forsaken is essentially the equivalent to the amount of homework I still have to worry about. As a heads up, I might split my review in 2 to 3 parts to save time and to get my thoughts out sooner. In the meantime, all that we can do, my Guardians-in-arms, is to “hope for the future”, and I have a very good feeling that it will be a grand one for us all! The Great Journey is at hand! *incomprehensible fanboy screeching in the background* But seriously though, I’ll shut up now....   :)         -Robozombie1
