Why Destiny 2's Annual Pass may be better than you think...

By: Mason LaPointe
As Destiny 2’s newest expansion is drawing ever closer to its release, a new form of the franchise’s season pass will also soon come to “pass”. When it was first announced during the Year 2 reveal stream on June 5, the reception was understandably negative. However, there’s more to it once you look past the price tag.

Unlike the previous season passes from the game series, this “Annual Pass” does away with one thing that the community (and especially the lore community) despises: half-baked excuses for story campaigns. Upon hearing of this during the stream, some of you may have thought: “Oh great, now Bungie’s taking a similar route to Treyarch by blatantly eliminating the campaign in their releases while both companies just so happen to be in cohoots with Activision, hmmm..... “ .  But fear not Guardians-in-arms! This is certainly not the case!

It just so happens that Bungie is subtly listening to our concerns regarding the lack of endgame content alongside the campaign complaints. To compensate for the absence of campaigns for each of the 3 releases in the Annual Pass, Bungie clarified that there will be more of what we, as Guardians, want in our content drops, more endgame content! Another (semi-obvious) reason why this exclusion is a truly great thing is that it will allow Bungie to devote so much more (and very much needed) time to create bigger and better story campaigns such as the ones from The Taken King and possibly Forsaken (if the campaign turns out to be good).

For the sake of wrapping up this article, here is a short recap of the pros and cons of the forthcoming Annual Pass:

Pros:   • More endgame content strewn across 3 releases from this pass.  • Allows Bungie to create bigger, and better story campaigns  • Prevents what would have easily been a content drought similar to Year 2 of Destiny 1

Cons:  • Reality (by reality, I of course mean the price tag). Admittedly, it would have been nice if Bungie had made this pass free for all Guardians, considering all the mistakes they’ve made in the past year, and it would have been a bit of an apology gift for their playerbase had they done so.

Besides that however, David “Deej” Dague said in the Year 2 reveal stream that there is no pressure in purchasing the pass. Moreover, you don’t need to worry about buying the pass right away if you don’t want to. If you were to only buy Forsaken and wait to see if you’re invested enough in the game to want to buy the pass later down the line, that’s perfectly fine (#totallynotapoet #itslikepoetrytheyrhyme #pleaselikeandsubscribe).

Thank you so much for reading my second entry on this “PikaPerfect” website my fellow Guardians!  Stay tuned for an upcoming article regarding my wishes and possible predictions regarding Forsaken’s story campaign, and for the love of the Traveler, stay #PikaPerfect!!
